Wordless Wednesday #137

A neat piece of railroad history rolled through NE Ohio a few days ago. On July 21 Norfolk Southern train 17N contained the Illinois Railway Museum's ex Conrail E33 RPCX #4601 (former CR 4601/PC 4601/NH 300/N&W 230/VGN 130). It sat at Altoona, PA for over a year waiting restorative work but then was shipped back to the museum where that work will now be done elsewhere. The fact that it once hauled coal on the Virginian Railroad's electric lines in Virginia and West Virginia in the late 1950's makes it pretty cool in my book! Chris Ellis Photo

  1. Dude! I should have left a message in a bottle for you or something - this engine was just down the track from my house almost 2yrs ago waiting for the first leg of it's journey to the IRM. Check it out: http://thenhrhtanewhavenrailroadforum.yuku.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7442&p=70558&hilit=illinois+railway+museum#p70558

    1. Hah that's pretty cool Chris! I had no idea it's journey start in your neck of the woods. Crazy it ended up taking two years to get this far. Since there's already one of these painted for the Virginian, let's hope this one gets a New Haven scheme.

  2. Living near Altoona I did see this engine in the yard awhile back. To bad it wasn't restored, I wonder what happened.

    1. Maybe the Norfolk Southern Shops in Altoona ended up too busy for a something low priority like a cosmetic restoration. Although they did an old UP DD40AX not too long ago. I wonder too, hopefully someone in Illinois will do the restoration work now.
