Continuing with the NYC/LEA&W theme from last week, here's NYC GP-7 #5917 at Minerva,Ohio on March 19,1967. Minerva was the NYC's home base for the mine runs to Piney Fork and other mines in the area. As with the Nickel Plate Road, non-dynamic brake equipped engines were sent into the hilly SE Ohio coal country. I'd like to know if the NYC ever entered Pine Valley through the W&LE/LEA&W connection to drop off cars? |
Yes! They interchanged and both served the Bradley Mine up Crow Hollow. On the RAIL to TRAILS site check the USGS St. Clairsville Quad in the NE corner you will see the Wye into Pine Valley. On my Last tour of the area, one of the stops was at or near where that wye left the L.E.A. & W. (NYC). We viewed the depot/freight house and we went The Dillonvale & Smithfield line, but we were unable to go up the Crow Hollow Branch due to strip mining. Also on that site is a map showing Mine Locations on the W.&L.E. It also shows the interchange. I can send you those links.

Yep I was there for that tour Denny. I know of the connection and interchange but I wonder if NYC engines actually entered W&LE/NKP property at Dillonvale or just shoved onto the connection and left the cars there instead of inside Pine Valley. I have a pair of Proto 2000 NYC GP7s and would like to sure they are really needed.
DeleteI was told that they did, but I have no photos or copies of paper work. That would make an interesting research project. I must call my contacts.

Thanks for the reply. I find that photos of NYC action on that end of the LEA&W seem to be exceptionally rare, so what we are told must do in many cases. Thanks for looking into it!
